Your Gateway to Singapore Government Schools
For international families, gaining entry into Singapore’s world-renowned public education system is a highly sought-after milestone. Singapore’s schools consistently rank at the top globally for mathematics, science, and literacy. However, for international students without permanent residency or citizenship, there is one mandatory gateway they must clear: the AEIS (Admissions Exercise for International Students).
Conducted annually by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Singapore, this centralized placement exam evaluates international students looking to enter Primary 2 to 5 and Secondary 1 to 3.
Critical Structure: Primary vs. Secondary Exams
According to the official MOE AEIS Test Details, the examination formats are split strictly by school levels:
1. For Primary School Applicants (P2/P3 and P4/P5)
- Mathematics-Only Sitting: There is no English paper during the physical AEIS test sitting.
- The Pre-requisite: Before you can register for the AEIS, students must sit for the relevant Cambridge English Qualification (CEQ) test (such as KET or PET) run by Cambridge Assessment English. They must achieve or exceed the required minimum CEQ scores within 12 months prior to the AEIS registration.
- The AEIS Test: Once the CEQ requirement is met, applicants sit exclusively for the AEIS Mathematics exam, which consists of two parts (Part 1: Multiple-choice questions, Part 2: Short-answer questions). Calculators are not allowed.
2. For Secondary School Applicants (S1, S2, and S3)
- Dual Subject Testing: Secondary applicants must sit for both the English and Mathematics papers during the centralized AEIS examination.
- The Format: The English paper tests writing (essays), comprehension, and language use. The Mathematics paper consists of multiple-choice, short-answer, and structured long-answer questions. Calculators are notallowed for any level.
The Real Challenge: Understanding the Rigor
The AEIS is a highly selective placement exam, and admission is not guaranteed. School placement is dependent on the student’s performance in the test, available vacancies in local schools, and their declared residential address in Singapore.
Most students find the test highly challenging because the Singapore curriculum moves rapidly. The mathematical section emphasizes logic, heuristics, and problem-solving structures (such as Bar Modeling) that are rarely taught in standard international curricula.
